3. General Description

3.1 Type of construction:

All wood construction.

3.2 No, of stories:

Each building has a two-story center section flanked by one-story wings.

3.3 Increments of construction:

No additions.

3.4 Present area of buildings as shovn in inventory records of Office of Campus Planning:

Building 240: 7795 sq. ft. gross; 7389 sq. ft. net assignable

Building 241: 2548 sq. ft. gross; 2285 sq. ft. net assignable

3.5 Volume of Buildings:

Building 240: 57,685 cubic feet (PP).

Building 241: 25,808 cubic feet (PP).

3.6 Source

Comprised of former Buildings H316/22 which were both relocated and rearranged. See diagram.

 

 

B. PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION

1. On April 11, 1938 the Board of Trustees approved plans prepared by Howard Dwight Smith, University Architect for the relocation of the Poultry Plant as a WPA project and directed the secretary to advise the WPA of this approval.

This project included, in addition to Buildings 240 and 241, the construction of Building 068, and the relocation or construction of six small portable buildings.

The drawings bear a 1940 architect's project number (4018) and are dated May 1938.

2. Construction:

Construction was by the Works Program Administration in accordance with plans prepared by Howard Dwight Smith.

3. Completion and occupancy:

No firm information has been noted relative to completion date, but a statement in the October 1939 Monthly (M 30:19) indicates 1939 as the moving date. Whether they vere ready for occupancy in 1939 is not known.

Prior to January 31, 1972 these buildings were listed as 2171 and 2175 North Fyffe Road. At that time the word "North" was dropped.

1. In an Office of Space Planning spreadsheet it lists the Poultry Breeding houses seperately and having square footages of 7,188 sq ft and 3,462 sq ft.  It also indicates that the demolition of the buildings were on June 1, 1997.
