A. IDENTIFICATION & LOCATION

1. Name

1.1 Officially names "The Metallurgical Engineering Building" by Board of Trustees on November 11, 1965.

1.2 Alternate names noted:

Built as "Housing for Metallurgical and Mineralogical Laboratories in an addition to the Chemical Engineering Building."

3. General Description

3.1 Type of construction:

Reinforced concrete frame with brick exterior.

3.2 No. of stories:

Basement plus 5 stories.

3.3 Increments of construction:

No additions. However, the Board of Trustees minutes for January 14, 1965 refer to Building 265 (McQuigg) as an addition to Building 151.

3.4 Present area of building as shown in inventory records of Division of Campus Planning:

32,604 sq. ft. gross; 20,807 sq. ft. net assignable

3.5 Volume of building:

B. PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION

1. On April 12, 1963 the Board of Trustees approved the plans and related documents prepared by Office of the University Architect (W. E. Linch) and authorized the solicitation of bids by contractors.

2. Bids were received on June 5, 1963 (T).

3. On June 14, 1963 the Board of Trustees approved the award of contracts to the following contractors:

General: James I. Barnes Construction Co.

Electrical: Electrical Contractors, Inc.

Heating, ventilating, & air conditioning: Tibbetts Plumbing & Heating Co.

Plumbing: Huffman-Wolfe Co.

Laboratory equipment: Hamilton Manufacturing co.

4. Completion and occupancy:

The building was released by the University Architect for occupancy in October and November 1964 (P).

5. Dedicated May 12, 1967 (L: May 15, 1967).

On March 6, 1981, the Board of Trustees named this building the "Mars G. Fontana Laboratories."
