A. IDENTIFICATION & LOCATION

1. Name

1.1 Officially named "Bradford Commons" by Board of Trustees on May 17, 1963, in memory of Joseph N. Bradford.

1.2 Alternate names noted:

Built under architect's project number 6136. Name on drawings is "Dining Facility-South." The name "Dining Hall South" has also been noted.

3. General Description

3.1 Type of construction:

Steel frame with brick exterior.

3.2 No. of stories:

Basement and one story.

3.3 Increments of construction:

None--entire building constructed at one time.

3.4 Present area of building as shown in inventory records of Division of Campus Planning:

23,994 sq. ft. gross; 16,799 sq. ft. net assignable

3.5 Volume of building:

325,100 cubic feet (PP)

B. PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION

1. On November 16, 1962 the Board of Trustees approved the plans and related documents prepared by W. E. Linch, University Architect, and authorized the solicitation of bids by contractors.

2. Bids were received on December 5 and 7, 1962 (T).

3. On February 15, 1963 the Board of Trustees awarded contracts to the following contractors:

General: Miller-Edwards Co., Inc.

Electrical: Electric Power Equipment Co.

Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning: Huffman-Wolfe Co.

Plumbing: J. A. Guy, Inc.

Kitchen Equipment: John Van Range Co.

At its meeting on November 16, 1962 the Board authorized the Vice President for Business and Finance to award contracts. The contracts are dated December 26, 1962 (A). The Board's action on February 15, 1963 was, therefore, a ratification.

4. Beginning of work:

A photograph in the Lantern on January 4, 1963 indicates that work was already under way at that date.

5. Completion and occupancy:

Building opened for business on March 2, 1964 for students living in Steeb Hall, with full operation expected on March 30, 1964 (L 3/2/64).

C. COST

Since 1967-68 this building has been carried in Business Office reports at $540,215.17.

D. MISCELLANEOUS

This building has been used only as a dining hall.

ADDENDUM NO. 4 Renaming/Remodeling

On November 4, 1988 The Board of Trustees resolved that The Black Cultural Center be named "The Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center".

ADDENDUM NO. 5 Remodeling

On June 7, 1988, Contracts were awarded for the Cultural Center renovation, which would turn the south portion of the building into the Office of Minority Affairs.

Contracts were awarded as follows:
