Built as "Addition to War Research Laboratory;"  or  "Addition to Research Laboratory" Graduate School

3. General Description

3.1 Type of construction:

Reinforced concrete frame with brick exterior.

3.2 No. of stories:

Basement and 2 stories.

3.3 Increments of construction:

No additions. See sketch for relationships to other buildings in this complex.

3.4 Present area of building as shown in inventory records of Division of Campus Planning:

9,320 sq. ft. gross; 6,882 sq. ft. net assignable

3.5 Volume of building:

162,000 cu. ft. (PP)

B. PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION

1. On July 7, 1896 the Board of Trustees approved the plans and related documents prepared by Peters, Burns, & Pretzinger and authorized the solicitation of bids by contractors.

2. Bids were received on June 14, 1951 (A).

3. On September 5, 1951 the Board of Trustees approved the award of contracts to the following contractors:

General: Haig M. Boyahohn & Associates, Inc.

Electrical: McCarty Brothers Electric Co.

Heating: Thomas J. Croak

Plumbing: Sheridan Heating & Plumbing Co.

4. Completion and occupancy:

On March 10, 1952 the Board of Trustees extended the time of completion for general, heating, and electrical contractors to June 1, 1952. However, the records in the University Architect Office indicated substantial completion of the general and plumbing contracts on March 1, 1952.

Listed at $127,044.44 as of June 30, 1975 (B).

E. MISCELLANEOUS

The Graduate School moved to the new University Hall (S 16) in January 1976.

Subsequently the space in Building 036 was assigned to the Department of Psychology (P).

Aviation Academic Facility

On December 2, 1988 The Board of Trustees approved the plan to build a two story addition above the existing 164 W. 19th Avenue. This addition is to be used for the Department of Aviation's academic facility

Contracts were awarded on July 29, 1991 as follows:

General: Farrell Construction, Columbus, Ohio.

Plumbing: Farber Corp., Columbus, Ohio.

HVAC: J.A. Guy, Columbus, Ohio.

Electric: Jess Howard Electric, Blacklick, Ohio.

The building has a reinforced concrete frame and masonry skin.

Total Project Cost: $1,421,257
